Dr. Sheila Wendler

Dr. Wendler was born in Brazil, wherein in 1993 she graduated from the Federal University of Parana Medical School, in Curitiba. After graduation, she moved to the United States to specialize in the field of psychiatry.


She completed her four years training in psychiatry in 1999 at the Texas Tech Health Science Center in El Paso, Texas. She then practiced in rural West Virginia to comply with the requirement for U.S. citizenship that she work in a medically underserved area for four years.


In 2004 she moved to Hawaii for a further year of subspecialty training in the field of forensic psychiatry at the University of Hawaii, equipping her to interact expertly with the legal system.


She also developed at this time expertise in postpartum psychiatric disorders. Dr. Wendler has worked as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry in the U.H. Department of Psychiatry and is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry. In addition to English, she is fluent in Portuguese.


From 2006 to 2014 Dr. Wendler worked for the Hawaii Department of Public Safety, practicing clinical and forensic psychiatry. This position allowed her to work closely with a great many victims of complex trauma. In 2014 she left this position and joined the staff of the King Kalakaua Center, where she is in the private practice of clinical and forensic psychiatry.


Unlike many contemporary psychiatrists, Dr.  Wendler, in addition to her medical and pharmacological expertise, is an experienced psychotherapist. She treats patients both on her own and jointly with KKC therapists of other disciplines. She is licensed to practice medicine in Hawaii and is Board Certified in psychiatry and forensic psychiatry.

  • To obtain a prescription refill a minimum 30-minute appointment is required and co-payment or Self-pay rate is due at the time of the visit.
